Aluminium Sand Casting: Gating and Riser Design

Objective

Cast simple parts with different gating and riser designs and study shrinkage, porosity and casting yield.

What you will build

Green-sand moulds with wooden or 3D-printed patterns, gating and riser systems of different designs, and a small crucible furnace to cast aluminium.

• Hardness comparison

What you will learn

The casting process, gating and riser design, solidification and typical casting defects.

Tools and notes

College foundry or workshop access, hardness tester, CAD. Needs heat-proof gloves, face shield and completely dry moulds and tools.
