Manual Plunger Injection Moulding Machine

Objective

Mould small parts and study how barrel temperature, pressure and cooling time affect part quality and shrinkage.

What you will build

A heated barrel with a thermocouple and controller, a plunger driven by a lever or screw, and a split aluminium or steel mould with a clamp, for small parts in polypropylene or polyethylene.

Results you can expect

• Moulded parts at different settings
• Shrinkage %
• Defects such as short shot and flash
• Cycle time and heater power

What you will learn

Plastic processing, mould design, temperature control and common moulding defects.

Tools and notes

PID temperature controller, thermocouple, CAD, lathe and milling for the mould, Excel. Use gloves, a guard and good ventilation for hot plastic.
