Objective

Find the best cutting parameters for the lowest surface roughness and the least tool wear using the Taguchi method.

What you will build

Round bars of mild steel or aluminium turned on a lathe with carbide inserts at different speed, feed and depth of cut, following an L9 orthogonal array.

Results you can expect

What you will learn

Machining, Design of Experiments, Taguchi method and ANOVA, widely used in manufacturing and quality work.

Tools and notes

Lathe, roughness tester and tool microscope (college or outside lab), Minitab or Excel. Wear safety glasses and follow lathe safety rules.

Resume points from this project
