Single-Phase Active PFC Boost Converter (Power Factor above 0.98)

Objective

Raise the power factor of a rectifier load and measure the harmonic improvement.

What you will build

A boost-type converter after a rectifier whose input current is shaped to follow the voltage, using a controller IC or a microcontroller.

Results you can expect

• Power factor and THD with and without PFC
• Efficiency
• Output ripple at twice the line frequency
• And response to load change

What you will learn

Power factor correction, current-mode control and harmonic standards.

Tools and notes

PFC controller IC (such as UCC28019) or STM32, MOSFET, inductor, power analyser. Mains-connected: isolation transformer, enclosure and fuse are essential.
