Objective

Understand how real languages work by building one end to end.

What you will build

A compiler for a small language with variables, loops, functions and conditions, covering the scanner, parser, syntax tree, type checks and code generation to bytecode or assembly.

Results you can expect

• Correct output on 30 test programs
• Helpful error messages with line numbers
• An optimisation (such as constant folding) with measured speed-up
• And a short language guide

What you will learn

Lexing, grammars, parsing, abstract syntax trees, symbol tables, and code generation.

Tools and notes

Python, C or Java, optional Flex/Bison or ANTLR, LLVM for an extension. A great project for viva and interviews.
