Multi-Crop Seed Drill with Metering Test

Objective

Build a seed drill and measure how well it meters seeds of different sizes and how even the seed spacing is.

What you will build

A wheeled frame with a seed hopper, a seed-metering plate or roller, a furrow opener, a drive from the ground wheel and a seed tube.

Results you can expect

• Seed rate vs distance travelled for 2-3 seeds
• Spacing uniformity (coefficient of variation)
• Seed damage %
• Field capacity estimate

What you will learn

Agricultural machinery, metering mechanisms, field testing and design for farmers.

Tools and notes

Measuring tape, seed samples, Excel. Needs welding and cutting. Test on soft soil and keep fingers away from the chain and sprocket.
