Motor Winding Temperature Rise Test by the Resistance Method

Testing / Electrical MachinesEasy-Medium

Approx. component budget: Rs. 3,000 - 6,000

Objective

Carry out a heat run on a small motor and calculate the temperature rise as in a test-lab procedure.

What you will build

A test set-up measuring a motor's winding resistance cold and hot, with thermocouples and a data logger, to calculate temperature rise and compare it with standard limits.

Results you can expect

What you will learn

Standard test procedures, insulation classes, thermal behaviour and measurement uncertainty.

Tools and notes

Small induction motor, milli-ohm meter or 4-wire measurement, K-type thermocouples, logger, Excel. Follow the relevant IS/IEC test method and keep guards on.
