Automatic Voltage Stabiliser with Relay Tap Changing

Power SystemsMediumMains supply: needs supervision

Approx. component budget: Rs. 5,000 - 9,000

Diagram of Automatic Voltage Stabiliser with Relay Tap Changing
Diagram (illustration, not to scale)

Objective

Hold the output voltage near 230 V as the input varies and measure regulation, step size and response time.

What you will build

An autotransformer with several tappings, relays to select each tap, a voltage-sensing circuit, a microcontroller with a delay and hysteresis, and a display with cut-off protection.

Results you can expect

What you will learn

Voltage regulation, tap changing, relay switching and protection in a product used in every home.

Tools and notes

Arduino, relays, autotransformer, variac for input variation, Excel. Works at mains voltage, so use full insulation, a fuse, an enclosure and supervision.
