Automatic Synchroniser for Two Single-Phase Sources

Power SystemsMedium-Hard

Approx. component budget: Rs. 7,000 - 12,000

Diagram of Automatic Synchroniser for Two Single-Phase Sources
Diagram (illustration, not to scale)

Objective

Detect when two AC sources are in step and give a safe closing signal, and measure the timing accuracy.

What you will build

Zero-crossing detectors on two sources, a microcontroller comparing voltage, frequency and phase angle, synchronising lamps and a relay that closes only when all conditions are met.

Results you can expect

What you will learn

Synchronisation conditions for alternators and grid connection, zero-crossing detection and timing.

Tools and notes

Arduino/ESP32, isolation transformers, relay, oscilloscope. Do not connect sources of different grounding, and use low-voltage isolated transformers only.
